Indian consumer drives sentiment!


The Indian consumer has been at the forefront of the economic growth and recovery. As per a report by Fitch Solutions, real household spending in India is expected to grow by a further 7.1% y-o-y over 2023, falling from the 10.1% growth in spending recorded in 2022. Yet, high-frequency data indicates that consumer confidence is yet to return to pre-Covid levels, suggesting that consumer spending on big ticket items will likely be deferred until the economic and health situation in the country stabilises.


The Indian consumer has been abundantly spending on travel, a sector that got long neglected during the pandemic. Domestic vacations have been more popular, and the winner clearly is the Indian businessman and government of India benefiting with the increased domestic spending. Let’s hope international travel normalizes to greater levels in 2023 and beyond.


Also, the India markets have been a standout this year, with the NSE Nifty 50 Index up ~7% as compared to an 18% slump in global stocks; yet, it must be noted that Indian markets remain the most expensive in Asia.
